March 22nd - April 2nd 1969 –“OPERATION MONTANA MAULER” Quang Tri Province, I Corps

 

– Recon in Force through Khe Chua Valley (where Battle of Cam Hung had been fought earlier). This location was also known as Mutter’s Ridge. Combined units included 1st Brigade 5th Infantry Division, 3rd Marine Division, I 3-9 Marines, 1st Battalion 11th Infantry, and 2nd ARVN Regiment. All units were involved in heavy fighting against NVA forces in well defended trench and bunker complexes, resulting in 21 US KIA and 150 wounded. The 27th NVA Regiment lost over 300 KIA.
